I've had this website since the summer. Week after week of putting it at the top of my to do list and never crossing it off. It wasn't until I was sitting in the midst of some deep dinner conversation at the Castello Mugnana that I realized On the Staircase has been sitting in hiding because I didn't know it what it was supposed to be yet. That I couldn't have known until I reached this point along this journey, had the chance to do some chiseling around what it is I'm trying to do with this trip, and where writing fit into that.

I've had a push and a pull away from the keyboard, a hesitation to put word to experience - at least in a public way. I always have small journals, and I'm sending more than 20 postcards every month - but handwriting is more intimate, more private. It doesn't make a claim that I have something worth saying. Now, at the turn of the year and the inspiration of two muses, Rebecca Solnit and Paul Perry, I'm starting the work.

I live a strange and special life. I am both always and never on vacation. I am always home and always traveling. I'm incredibly fortunate to have lived a life full of opportunities to take the actions that would bring me to this point.

With this site I will try and capture my own living as an art, put illustration to what I think it means to be a good guest-citizen of the world.
